First date
You stand with your back to me
head tilted skyward towards the red sun as it sets on the water
behind the wheel it’s hard to tell what is more beautiful
the way the sun curves around your body
or how the wake behind us waves outward over vacant water as I stop the motor
you brush your hair from your face
smile back at me and we sit
maybe it’s the lake
maybe it’s the sun
or the way the sky looks off the bow of my pontoon on this particular night but
you’ve never looked more beautiful.
perhaps it’s the way your ankles swing through it
or the way you gaze out at it but
this lake has never been more perfect you
slowly became a part of this lake
and my heart
and my life you
slowly learned to steer and
I could not be more pleased
that you
you and I we get to breath the same air and
it’s not the type of thing anyone could prepare me for but
when my heart beats onto the water
and your breath breathes into the lake
I swear
our souls move together
beat together
even sing together
to the same prep school backyard lake drum
and that
this is
perhaps the best music we will ever dance to
